Safe Kids Oklahoma is a statewide network of coalition partners dedicated to preventing childhood injury in Oklahoma. Staff at The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital head-up Safe Kids Oklahoma, their goal is to educate the public by facilitating events at schools and communities across the state.
Cassandra Herring, coalition coordinator Safe Kids Oklahoma travels to schools, attends community awareness events and works with coalition partners to educate parents, teachers and children on injury prevention techniques.
“Every day in the United States, 44 children under the age of 19 are hit by a vehicle. It is extremely important to reach children at a young age to help them set good habits for safety and health. Interactive teaching of bicycle and pedestrian safety is one way we can prepare children for a safer tomorrow,” said Herring.
Working with educators is vital to ensure students have the tools they need to stay safe when traveling to and from school. Safe Kids Oklahoma has a diverse network of partners that strengthens their audience reach. Coalition members Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) and Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) provide assistance for public car seat checks and installations.
“We were delighted to partner with Safe Kids Oklahoma to help bring needed awareness to the issue of child passenger safety,” said Jack Damrill, OTA, director of Communications and Facilities. “Our Children’s Car Seat Safety Check event is an opportunity to focus on the importance of safety and properly securing all children with appropriate child safety seats, booster seats and seatbelts.”
Safe Kids Oklahoma is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, which prevents unintentional injuries to children ages’ birth to 19, through education, deployment of resources, and delivery of services.
