Did you know our pharmacy provides over 935,000 doses of medicine a year? With October being National Pharmacist Month, we would like to recognize our hard-working team of pharmacists. The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital employs a team of four pharmacists and four pharmacy technicians who provide medication solely for Hospital patients.
Pharmacists must ensure accuracy and patient safety with nearly 18,000 doses of medication administered each week. The Hospital brought pharmacy services in-house in 2014 after relying on outsourced pharmacy services. This shift allowed pharmacists to focus on the needs of our patients and find innovative ways to meet those needs.
“We strive to serve and support other disciplines in providing for the needs of patients. Whether this is consulting with a clinician on medication dosing, troubleshooting administration concerns with nursing staff or getting medicine to patients in a timely fashion, we recognize we are an important part of patient care,” said Denton Chancey, executive director of patient care services.
In addition to the in-house staff, the pharmacy regularly staffs interns from Southwestern Oklahoma State University School of Pharmacy. A clinical pharmacist and faculty member from the university also oversees the antibiotic stewardship program in the pharmacy.
