Recently the Pediatric Clinic at The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital hosted a fair to enhance asthma awareness, as there are numerous misconceptions about the chronic disease.
“Many people are under the impression asthma can’t harm them, but in reality, there are many asthma-related deaths every day,” said Dawn Ayala, director of respiratory, The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital. “Asthma is very manageable if you have the proper education and medication tools.”
The asthma fair consisted of various information booths including fun activities for children. From creative crafts such as constructing a pair of lungs from straws and balloons, to racing games as who could blow the cotton ball across the finish line the fastest. The fair was filled with educational activities for both parent and child.
“We also had a real pig lung we ventilated with one of our ventilators. This allowed attendees to see how the lungs work. The kids enjoyed putting gloves on and actually touching it,” said Ayala.
The Pediatric Clinic at The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital offers comprehensive general pediatric services, including asthma education. When a patient has been diagnosed with asthma, they attend an asthma education class for free provided by the clinic.
According to Shelby Weber, respiratory therapist, The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital, a respiratory therapist leads the asthma education class. After a patient is diagnosed with asthma, the patient and their guardian attend the class where they learn what asthma is, provided various education materials and receive tools to help monitor the patient’s breathing. They are also given an action plan to help navigate the patient’s treatment process.
The Pediatric Clinic at The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital provides a wide variety of services to more than 2,300 patients each year, ranging from general pediatrics to advanced medical care.
